The Butcher's Block Story

Robert H. Butcher, Jr. founded Butcher's Block & Building Materials on September 1, 1980. The company started out very small with only 2 employees, Bob Butcher being one of them. Since that time, the company has grown from a small lumber yard into one of the largest in the area. Bob Butcher worked hard running Butcher’s Block every day, until his untimely death in December of 2007. Butcher’s Block bought out an existing lumber company (Homestead Supplies) in June, 1988 and branched out into a full retail hardware store that carries a full line of paint, plumbing and electrical supplies and now employees 30+ people. In July of 2005 we also purchased a lumber and hardware store in Lucerne Valley.

Through hard work and dedication we are proud of the company we are today.  We are Big Bears only family owned and operated lumber yard and home center. Bob and Theela, as well as their kids Glenn and Amy, are all Big Bear High School graduates, making the Butcher family deeply rooted in this community. Their caring hearts for this town and the people is evident from the 100’s of sponsorships and support for youth and community programs over these decades.  We look forward to many more years of service to our community and great service for our customers!

Meet the Team

Glenn Butcher

Owner and General Manager

Glenn has been at Butcher's Block 23+ years and worked side by side with Bob learning the ropes of how to run this ever changing business. Glenn started out at the bottom, working in the yard, then drove a truck hauling material, and moved to the contractor’s desk about 15 years ago. He still loves the interaction with all of the contractor’s (most, long time friends) as well as homeowners. Glenn and Theela (Glenn’s Mom) have been running Butcher's Block together since Bob’s untimely death in 2007. Theela still has an active role in the day to day operations of Butcher's Block and her years of knowledge are very helpful. Buffey (Glenn’s wife) also works at Butcher's Block doing the payroll for both companies. Glenn has lived in Big Bear his whole life and has a strong sense of family and community. He hopes to continue to provide great quality along with outstanding customer service for years to come.
