When shopping for a ceiling fan here's how to determine what size you will need:
42-In. ceiling fan is ideal for a room with 144 sq. ft. (approx. 12 x 12 ft.).
44-In. ceiling fan is ideal for a room with 225 sq. ft. (approx. 15 x 15 ft.).
52-In. ceiling fan is ideal for a room with 400 sq. ft. (approx. 20 x 20 ft.).
If your room is larger than 20 x 20 ft., think about getting two fans.
When purchasing extension cords make sure that you get the right size for the job. There are outdoor and indoor household types as well as commercial cords with heavier gauges, higher amp ratings and extra flexibility. Indoor cords come with two-wires in lengths up to 15'. Heavy-duty cords come in lengths up to 100' and are used for outdoor lighting, appliances and power tools. They come in 16/3, 14/3, and 12/3 wire.
Quickly put, a GFCI detects grounding problems and shuts electricity off to prevent a possible accident. They are very sensitive to even the slightest variation of current running through them. If this variation is detected, a breaker is tripped and the power is shut to the outlet. Even with proper wiring and fusing, variations commonly occur in kitchens and bathrooms because of the current's proximty to moisture. Since ground faults are so serious and can cause damage and fire, the National Electric Code requires all new homes to have GFCIs installed in kitchens, bathrooms, workrooms, basements, garages, exterior outlets and especially near swimming pools. It is also suggested that if you own an older home that does not have GFCIs, you should install them for the safety of your family and home.
With the increasing use of electronics in the home and office, surge protectors are becoming a must for everyone. There are basically two different types of suppressors: one that plugs directly into the wall outlet; the other is for the whole house and it mounts directly at the service panel to protect against lightening damage.
There are a few different types of switches that can be installed in the home. A single-pole switch is the simplest and most commonly used switch, controlling current on one circuit from one point. Two terminal screws are needed for this type of switch. The double-pole switch needs four terminal screws and controls two circuits from one point. Three-way switch controls one circuit from two separate points (i.e. the light in the garage can be turned on/off from the house or inside the garage). A four-way switch is used when you have three-way switches that control one circuit from three or more points.
Cabinet catches not only keep doors closed, but they prevent the door from saggging due to prolonged use. They come is several varieties including roller spring and magnetic. Choose the right catch for your installation according to the type of door and your personal choice.
A deadbolt lock backs up a lockset on entry doors to provide maximum security. Better units have a stainless steel bolt with a roller insert to resist sawing and cutting. The standard length for a bolt to extend into a door is 1-inch. The bolt locks the door into the frame, therefore the longer the bolt the harder it would be for the door to be pried open.
Door closers are different than a regular spring or spring hinge in that it closes the door at a controlled speed. Common residential types have pneumatic or hydraulic piston closers that pull the door closed. Most operate with a spring and piston. When the door is opened, the spring is depressed that will activate the door to close. The piston controls the speed that the spring returns back to the original position. Better grades of closers speed up at the last few inches to insure a tight close.
Garage door openers operate through a large motor unit that raises and lowers overhead doors after the command from a control unit. There are three types of drive mechanisms: bicycle-type chain and sprocket, plastic strip, and worm-screw drive. No design has been judged superior and all work well.
The hinge required for any job depends on the design and size of the door that you want to hang. It's best to know the parts of a hinge before making your purchase. A hinge consists of the leaves, knuckles, pin, tips and bearings. The leaves are the flat components with screw holes that fasten to the door and jamb. The knuckle is the cylinder that holds the leaves to the pin. A hinge can have from two to five knuckles depending on the size of the door. The tips project from the top and bottom of the hinge to keep the pin from coming out of the knuckle. Bearings are important in heavy-duty hinges because they lubricate and reduce friction on heavy-duty knuckles.
Padlocks provide portable security for movable items such as bikes and boats and in locations such as lockers and outdoor sheds. Although weatherproof construction is important, high security is important to protect expensive equipment. Pin-tumbler padlocks provide maximum security for valuables and laminated types are nearly unbreakable. The type of metal used in construction is important to consider. Hardened solid steel and steel alloys make better locks and shackles; solid brass is more resistant to rust than steel but can be damaged because it is softer than steel. Pin-tumbler locking mechanisms make padlocks harder to pick. Four-pin-tumbler mechanisms provide enough security for most uses and padlocks with five or more pin tumblers offer more security and are more secure than combination locks.
Choose the Right Sheen - Know your finish before you start.
Once you have selected a color, our experts can help you choose the correct type of paint finish (or sheen) for your project. Consider the room you’re painting when choosing a finish:
FLAT – Provides a smooth look and hides surface imperfections. The ideal choice for living rooms, dining rooms, dens and home offices.
EGGSHELL - (Not available for exteriors) Has a soft, washable sheen that looks great in living rooms, dining rooms, dens and home offices.
SATIN – Offers a slightly shiny appearance that holds well to washing. Use in heavy-traffic areas, such as hallways, kid’s bedrooms and playrooms.
SEMI-GLOSS – Has a higher sheen level than satin, but as shiny as gloss. Use in kitchens and bathrooms or trim and windows.
GLOSS – Highest sheen level. Perfect for use on doors, cabinets and trim areas that are washed often.
Paint brushes come in a variety of sizes and styles. Smaller brushes should be used for smaller areas and for detail work whereas a large brush can handle a bigger project. Square or flat brushes are available with natural or synthetic bristles. These are generally used for painting around the house because they can cover a large area in less time. Angular or chiseled brushes are available with natural or synthetic bristles. They are designed to use on jobs where cutting-into corners and painting trim, molding, and windows would be required. The filament is the most important part of the brush because it comes in contact with the paint.
Caulking and sealing are inexpensive ways to seal air or water leaks in homes, protect surfaces from outdoor conditions and fill in unsightly gaps. Keep in mind that no individual product is an all-purpose solution. The term caulk and sealant are often used interchangeably but they are not exactly the same.
For edging, cutting in and painting flat trim, foam pads provide a convenient alternative to brushes. Because they're flat, they leave less surface texture in the paint and they tend not to drip or spatter. Their flexibility also makes them ideal for reaching inside tight areas (like vents of heat registers). Some feature roller wheels that cut in close and give a professionally finished look.
For most walls and ceilings you'll use a paint roller. The best generally have a steel frame, a metal cage, and a threaded handle that can hold an extension pole.
There are several different bathtub materials to choose from if you're looking to replace your bathtub.
A new tub will last you awhile, pick something that you will enjoy for the next 20 years or so. Also something to keep in mind, "jetted" or whirlpool tubs, have become very affordable, come in all sizes and can add to the resale of your home.
Drain augers are commonly used to unclog toilet bowls. Since these fixtures have a built-in reversing action or a U-shaped trap, sometimes a great amount of pressure must be exerted to the end of the snake to force it up and over the drainpipe opening. For these types of stoppages, an auger at least 6' to 8' in length must be used. It will have to be forced vigorously back and forth after an obstruction is felt to break up the blockage and it can be flushed away with water.
Faucets for the kitchen and bath are available in one or two handle models and come in a variety of styles. As a homeowner, deciding what style you want to install is just as important as knowing how to repair it once it is installed.
It's not the icicles that you see hanging off your roof that are going to do the damage to your home. It's what you can't see underneath that causes the problems. Using roof & gutter de-icing cables prevents water and ice damage by providing a clear path for melting water to flow off the roof. Be aware that these cables are not designed to melt all the snow and ice off of the roof, but to prevent ice dams from forming in gutters, downspouts and tab shingles.
A pipe cutter makes cutting through pipe much easier than using a hack saw, which too many do-it-yourselfers often try to do. Most cutters have one cutting wheel and two rollers that make smooth, right-angle cuts on pipe 1/8" to 6" in diameter. Major points of wear are on the rollers, wheels and pins that they are mounted on. When the cutting wheels have worn out, it is advised that you purchase new wheels instead of trying to sharpen them yourself.
Standard showerheads typically have full-range, adjustable water pressure sprays and feature self-cleaning rims and swivel ball joints. They are typically made of chrome-plated brass or plastic. Remember that although plastic is usually less expensive it will also be less durable. All new models must meet the federal standard of 2.5 gallons per minute.
The main purpose of a sump pump is to get rid of excess ground water that accumulates around a basement that is below the water line. The basement should have a drain tile around it to collect ground water and bring it to the sump in the basement.
On average, a toilet seat should be changed every 3-5 years. Better products have high-quality plastic or kiln-dried hardwood seats and lids with tongue and groove fitting. Nylon hardware is a sturdy option and won't rust. If you decide on a seat cover with metal hardware, solid with a chrome-plated nickel finish is best. Some seats have easy on-and-off hinges that make it possible for you to install easily and remove for a thorough cleaning.
If you hate the taste of well water or would rather drink water with fewer chemicals in it, you need a filtration system. There are a few different types of filters on the market depending on what you are looking for. Filters typically use an activated charcoal filter to remove up to 98% of the lead found in water and 99.5% of the bacteria, chlorine, odor and bad taste.

Chatsworth, Ca. In 1988, two brothers started a machine shop in the San Fernando Valley with a conventional lathe and mill. This soon expanded into a 20,000 square foot building with state of the art single and multi axes computer controlled machinery. 14 years later - Hobby becomes creative work. In 1999 they began the work of designing Avet reels. In January of 2002, Avet Reels introduced a new line of saltwater reels destined to revolutionize the conventional reel market. Avet uses spur gearing in lower ratio models and featured a unique planetary gear system in high-speed retrieval models. This allows for effortless operation under demanding conditions imposed by anglers pursuing larger game fish species.
