The Butcher's Block Story

Robert H. Butcher, Jr. founded Butcher's Block & Building Materials on September 1, 1980. The company started out very small with only 2 employees, Bob Butcher being one of them. Since that time, the company has grown from a small lumber yard into one of the largest in the area. Bob Butcher worked hard running Butcher’s Block every day, until his untimely death in December of 2007. Butcher’s Block bought out an existing lumber company (Homestead Supplies) in June, 1988 and branched out into a full retail hardware store that carries a full line of paint, plumbing and electrical supplies and now employees 30+ people. In July of 2005 we also purchased a lumber and hardware store in Lucerne Valley.

Through hard work and dedication we are proud of the company we are today.  We are Big Bears only family owned and operated lumber yard and home center. Bob and Theela, as well as their kids Glenn and Amy, are all Big Bear High School graduates, making the Butcher family deeply rooted in this community. Their caring hearts for this town and the people is evident from the 100’s of sponsorships and support for youth and community programs over these decades.  We look forward to many more years of service to our community and great service for our customers!

Butcher Family

In July of 2005 Bob and Theela Butcher bought Valley Hardware & Building Supply from Bob & Sarah Delperdang. It seemed like a perfect fit ~ a small town family owned and operated established business that was built on hard work and dedication. Jason Haldeman, a former Butcher's Block Big Bear employee since 1998, has managed the store and the yard from the beginning. Jason runs the Lucerne store the same way that the Big Bear store is run, with customer service and satisfaction being our number one priority! Butcher’s Block Lucerne Valley is a full service Hardware Store and Lumber Yard as well as Truss Builders and Shed Builders. We are dedicated to helping our community through our many sponsorships including; The FFA, Lucerne Valley Equestrian Club, The Lucerne Valley Schools, and Lucerne Valley BMX as well as many others. We look forward to many more years of service to our community and great service for our customers.
